Dragonfly across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single black dragonfly is tattooed centrally across the upper back, with its wings spread horizontally and a long, thin body running down the spine. The wings show fine hatched and veined detail in solid black ink, while the body is a single unbroken line. The pale skin and dark camisole strap make the monochrome design stand out against a soft, neutral background.

The wind off the shingle had got into the boarding house again, so Mrs Pell went round the upstairs rooms with a tin of putty, stopping every crack she found. Nobody paid her to notice the dragonflies. They came up the estuary each August and rested on the sash cords, and her late husband had always said they were the souls of drowned fishermen, too restless to settle.

The summer the Harrow boy came to lodge, he carried a drawing book and a bag of pins. He pinned the dragonflies flat on card, wings open, and Mrs Pell told him to stop. He said he only wanted to see how they were made. She showed him the body instead: a single thread of dark that ran from head to tail without a break, as if someone had drawn it in one go and never lifted the pen.
He left in September without paying the last week. Mrs Pell found the drawing book under his bed. The pages were full of wings, every vein counted, every hatched cell shaded in with the patience of a man who had nothing else to do. On the last page he had drawn her from behind, and given the dragonfly no body at all, only the long line running down toward the floor.
She kept the book in the hall cupboard beside the putty. In August the dragonflies came up the estuary again, and she stood at the back door and counted them, the way her husband used to, until the light went off the water and the line of them was gone.
