Butterfly tattoo on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A butterfly is tattooed on the upper back near the shoulder blade, shown in profile with its wings spread slightly. The wings have black linework and bold black markings, with orange, red and yellow fills that fade into softer shading toward the lower wing. The skin is warm-toned and the image is cropped closely around the tattoo, with a pale top strap visible at the lower edge.

At Carrow Bridge the monarchs arrived before the lorries did. My shift started at six, and by the time I had the kettle on they were already settling along the chain-link fence, wings folded like pages in a closed book. My dad was the one who started counting them, a small tally in the margin of the duty log beside the entries for cattle and timber. When he retired he left me the pen and the habit. Nobody else at the checkpoint thought the numbers mattered, but nobody had asked me to stop either.

One grey morning a woman came through on foot with a canvas tote and a passport so often damp that the photograph had faded to a bruise. She said she had nothing to declare. I believed her, mostly because she kept glancing at the bag, which was shifting and rustling on its own. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel, was a tub of milkweed with a dozen caterpillars feeding on the leaves. She taught Year Five in the village on the far side and wanted to show the children a chrysalis before the spring term ended.
I asked her if the butterflies needed a stamp. She laughed, then stopped laughing, because a single monarch had lifted off the fence, crossed the white line painted across the tarmac, and landed on the open ledger on my desk. It rested right beside my dad's tally, its wings the exact orange of the ink pad. I didn't stamp anything. I simply wrote one more number in the margin, and let the woman carry her caterpillars home.
