Realistic butterfly on a shoulder blade

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A butterfly with outstretched wings and thin antennae sits on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The wings are shaded with smooth gradients and soft highlights that give a three-dimensional effect, with a shadow cast beneath the body. Orange, pink and yellow inks fill the wings, and black edging and body shading frame the design against the skin.

Dear Tomasz, the guard at Lipki made me open the case twice. He held each specimen up to the lamp the way Father used to, turning the card until the wings caught the light. Most of them were brown and dull, moths really, but the painted lady at the top was still the colour of a sunset over the beet fields: orange gone pink at the tips, a yellow edge like a stripe of old lemon. He asked where a girl gets wings like that. I said from the pins, which was meant as a joke, and he did not laugh. He wrote something on his form and waved me on.

I think he was really asking about the one I did not show him. It is wrapped in your old school scarf at the bottom of my bag, and I have not looked at it since the morning we buried Mama. You always said that butterfly was the only thing Father ever made with his hands that was not a trap or a cage. He painted it on the inside of the lid for me when I was six, and it has been flying in the dark ever since.

The bridge was empty except for a single lamp and the river going black beneath it. Halfway across, something lifted off the railing beside me, small and orange, and turned twice in the air before it settled on the sleeve of my coat. The guard on the far side saw it too. He did not stop me. I stood there long enough for it to decide, then it opened its wings and went south, back towards you, and I walked on alone.
