Butterfly tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A butterfly with outlined, open wings sits on the upper back of a person whose face is not shown. The wings are filled with soft shading that gives them depth, while the body is drawn in darker ink. The ink reads as mostly black and grey against warm skin tones, and the butterfly is centred in the frame on a plain dark background.

The proving baskets are already breathing when you unlock the back door, so you know Dorothy has been in before you. She never waits for the kettle. Flour hangs in the lamplight over the bench like something that has not yet decided where to land, and you sweep it into your palm out of habit before you tie your apron.

Dorothy taught you to score a loaf the way she was taught in Sheffield, with a razor held at a slant and one clean stroke per wing. Most mornings you cut ordinary tramlines. This morning you mark the two wings of a sourdough boule, opening from a single seam, with a thin slash down the middle for the body. She watches over your shoulder and says nothing, which from her is praise.

The oven door opens at ten to six. Steam rolls out, and the loaf rises and splits along the lines you cut, the wings lifting open, gold and blistered, as if they had been waiting to. Dorothy lifts it onto the rack with a folded cloth and taps the base twice, the way she taps a cask she is pleased with.

By seven the first delivery van has gone and the shop window is pale with light. A man in a hi-vis jacket stops, reads the card you wrote, and asks for the one with the wings. You wrap it in brown paper and hand it over warm. Behind the counter Dorothy is already shaping the next batch, and you realise the loaf will be torn open at a kitchen table before anyone notices it was ever a butterfly, which is exactly how she likes it.
