Pink 3D butterfly on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A pink and red butterfly with black-edged wings and white-spotted borders sits on the upper back near the shoulder, with its body and antennae visible. A dark grey shadow beneath the wings gives the butterfly a lifted, three-dimensional appearance against the skin. The background is pale and softly lit, with the subject's hair visible at the top left of the frame.

The last of the red ochre was going on the canopy bracket at Thornley Junction when Ada Pryce saw the butterfly land on the wet paint. It was a monarch gone the colour of raspberry jam, and it settled on the iron as if it had been ordered there. She set down her brush and didn't move. Behind her the 14:10 to Carlisle was already breathing on the platform, and somebody's dog was barking at the tannoy.

Her foreman, Len, had told her that the shadow was the whole trick. Paint the wings flat and they look like wings on a wall, he said. Paint the shadow beneath them, dark and soft, and the thing lifts off the metal as though it means to leave. She had spent three weeks on the old station sign, grey smudged into grey, until the lettering seemed to hover. Nobody on the platform ever looked at the letters.

The butterfly opened and closed its wings twice, testing the paint, then it lifted. It didn't go towards the train. It rose past the glass roof and out over the goods yard, and Ada watched until the whistle drowned out her thinking. When she looked back, the pink was smudged a little where its feet had been, a faint print of a visitor.

Len came along the platform with two tea cups and found her still on the ladder. He squinted up at the bracket, then at the empty air. 'Where's your butterfly gone?' 'Gone to Carlisle,' Ada said, and handed him a cup. Below them the shadow stayed on the brick, dark and patient, holding the place where it had been.
