Butterfly trail across the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Six butterflies drift diagonally across bare skin above dark pinstriped trousers, growing larger towards the upper right of the frame. The wings are outlined with clean linework and shaded in grey and black ink. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the image is evenly lit against a plain background.

Behind him, on the first morning, a single pale butterfly lifted off the thyme by the well and followed him to the boundary stone. Nobody believed the girl who saw it. Nobody believed her when a second came, and then a third, each one a little larger than the last, as though the air itself were growing braver the further he went.

By the crossing at the dry river there were six of them, drifting along the path in a line that bent upward towards the hills where the sun still sat. At the pass a shepherd swore he saw them settle on the brother's shoulder, then lift again and rise into the wind. Berenike's mother said that was what the wind does with things it means to keep. She laid out bread on the sill every night after that.

Years later the brother came back up the same track with grey in his beard and a wife who could not stop laughing at the stories. The butterflies were waiting on the thyme by the well, wings open, as though they had never left. Berenike told the children they had only been counting his steps home, and that is why, when you see one wandering alone, you must never chase it away.
