Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
Five butterflies with teal and blue wings, outlined in black, are arranged in a diagonal line from the upper back down towards the side. The wings use soft gradient shading and fine detail on the veins and wing markings, with white spots along the black borders. The colour is teal and blue on pale skin, with the background kept plain.

The dance hall at Haverley had a floor so worn that the boards dipped in a path from the door to the fiddler's chair, and every Saturday the bandleader, a thin man called Ezra Pell, swore he would nail them flat before spring. Nobody believed him. Nobody much minded, either, for the dips caught the lamplight and made the floor look like water.

The year the cannery shut, five sisters from the lower road came to the dances in blue dresses their mother had dyed from a tin of indigo, and they danced so close together that the men said they moved like one long thing folding and unfolding. They never sat out. They never took the same partner twice. When the fiddle slowed, they rose off their heels and drifted a little above the boards, just enough that the dust settled on the air beneath them instead of on the floor.
One November, a surveyor named Tobias Crane came down from the city with a measuring chain and a grudge against the hall's crooked walls. He stayed for the Saturday dance to prove a point about the joists. He watched the sisters for an hour, then took out his chain and laid it along the dip in the floor, and the chain ran true from the door to the chair and then, very gently, bent upward at the far end like a question. He wrote that down in his book. Then he asked the eldest sister to dance, and she laughed and said he could try.
By spring the hall was level, the surveyor had gone back to the city, and the five blue dresses hung folded in a cedar chest. On the first warm night, Ezra Pell played a slow reel and the boards creaked under nobody at all.
