Candle, crescent moon and rose design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing on pale paper shows a lit candle in a holder at the centre, surrounded by a rose with layered petals, a crescent moon, stylised clouds and an ornate scroll frame strung with beads. Four-pointed sparkles fill the empty areas around the motif. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading or colour, and the design fills the page in a balanced, symmetrical arrangement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lambing shed smells of wet straw and iodine, and the ewe in pen four has been straining since before the church bell struck three. You kneel in the muck with your sleeves pushed past the elbow and wait for the second foot to show. Your father always said a candle in the window keeps a bad night honest, so the stub of beeswax in the tin lantern is the only light you have, and it bends every time the door lets the draught in.

Out past the gate the moon is a paring of silver over Hobb's Rise, and the clouds keep sliding across it as if they have somewhere better to be. Frost has come down on the rose bushes by the water trough, the last hips hanging dark red. Your mother cut that rose the summer she married, and it has been crawling up the cowshed wall ever since, stubborn as a lie told twice.

The lamb comes all at once, slick and furious, and you rub its ribs with a sack until it sneezes. The ewe lifts her head and makes the low, cross sound that means she is hers again. You sit back on your heels. The candle has guttered to a bead of flame, and the wax has run over the lip of the tin and set in pale ridges like the ripples on a pond.

At first light you carry the candle back to the kitchen and find the window already grey with dawn. Your mother is at the range with the kettle, not looking round. On the sill sits a jar of frost-bright sprigs she has gathered for you, sparkling with melt. She sets the kettle down and says nobody asked you to sit up, and you say nobody asked you not to, and the two of you laugh until the ewe starts calling again across the yard.
