The lift in Ashgrove House has been broken since March, so you carry the shopping up eleven floors with a bag split at the bottom and a tin of pears rolling against your shin. On the landing you stop to breathe and look down the stairwell, where someone has taped a photocopied sheet to the wall. Lost: one sea goat, answers to Mira, last seen on the roof of Block C. Fins chipped. Please do not feed.

Nobody on the estate believes the notice, and Mrs Okafor from flat six says the council paints over that sort of nonsense every spring. But you saw her yourself on Tuesday, at the bins behind the car park, sitting on the lid of the big green skip with her tail curled round the handle like a hosepipe. Her horns were gold and ridged like old piano keys, and she was sorting the post-box flyers into piles by the colour of their logos, which she said was the only honest way to read them.

She asked you, very politely, whether the sea was still where it had always been, and you said you thought so, though the nearest one was forty miles off past the ring road. She nodded as if that was the answer she had expected, then pulled a crisp packet out of the skip, flattened it with one blue fin, and folded it into a small, neat boat.

Now you put the bag down outside your door and go back to the stairwell, taking the notice with you. You fold it twice and tuck it into your coat. Below, the bins are rattling, and a gull lands on the roof of Block C with a shriek that sounds almost like a laugh.
