Woman with bird and orchids sketch
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a woman with closed eyes and wavy hair, crowned with plumeria-style flowers. A bird with spread wings perches at the top left, and orchids and budding branches sit at the lower left, while a swirl of stars and dots fills the upper right. The shading uses fine hatched strokes in black and grey on a plain white background.

By the time the glasshouse lamps were lit, the bird had already claimed the window ledge nearest the potting bench, and Mrs Alder had stopped trying to shoo it. You were the one who swept up the petals every morning, the pale pinwheel blooms that dropped from the frangipani in the far bed and never seemed to rot. Nobody in the village could say where the tree had come from. It had simply been there when the old wall fell.

The orchids were the trouble. They bloomed in November, which was wrong, and each spike opened with a little hush, as though someone had asked them to be quiet. Mrs Alder wrote their names in the ledger in pencil, then in ink, then tore the page out. You kept the spare pages in your apron pocket and found, in the mornings, that the names had changed themselves overnight into words you did not recognise, words that tasted of cold tin when you said them aloud.
On the last night of the month the sky above the wall began to turn. Stars came loose from the dark and spun slowly in a column, dropping dust onto the cold frames like sugar through a sieve. The bird flew up into it and did not come down. You followed it out with a trowel and a paper twist of seed, and found it perched on a branch of budding blossom that had not been there at dusk.
You knelt in the wet soil and pressed the seed in with your thumb. Mrs Alder would have a fit about the cold frame, and the ledger would need a new page, but the bird tilted its head at you the way a clerk does when a form is finally correct. By morning there was one small orchid on the bench, open and quiet, and the ledger had a name for it written in your own hand.
