Capricorn sea-goat design
Mixed · Flash
A horned goat figure with a gold-brown fur body, blue horns and blue jewel-like markings sits atop a coiled fish tail. The fins and scales are rendered in fine, detailed shading with soft blue gradients. The design is shown in full on a plain cream background, with the tail sweeping out to the lower left.

Dear Nell,

The windfalls are rotting faster than the wasps can eat them, and our creature is still lying in the old mill leat at the bottom of the orchard, where the water has been down to mud since June. Dad says I have been at the cider again. Perhaps I have, but I have also seen it. The back half is a fish, coiled round the stump of the Bramley like a mooring rope, and every scale catches the light the way the sprinkler does at dusk. The front is a goat, gold and shaggy, with horns that curl twice and shine blue at the tips, and little blue stones set into its shoulders as if someone had pressed them there for luck.
Tomas from next door dared me to touch a horn, so I did, and it looked at me the way Gran used to look at a bad cheque. Then it lowered its head and ate three of the split windfalls straight from my palm. It doesn't care for the sweet ones. It wants the sour Blenheims that nobody else will carry up the hill.
Tuesday's storm finally filled the leat to the lip. This morning I went down and it had gone, and where it had lain there was a long dragged furrow running to the drain grate, and in the mud a fin the size of a bedsheet, spread out flat like a dropped fan. I took one scale. It's in a jam jar on my windowsill now, still blue, still warm from the sun.
Write back and tell me if you've ever seen anything like it in the sea at Whitby.
Love, Hettie
