Watercolour peacock with feather eyes
Colour · Flash
A stylised peacock stands in profile with its head raised and its long tail fanned behind it. The painting uses soft watercolour washes, fine dark linework and small dotted details, with gold accents on the neck and crest. The blue, teal and green colours fill most of the composition, set against a white background with splashes of colour around the tail.

The orchard at Hollin Fold had gone to plums that August, and the wasps were drunk on them by noon. Mrs Abel Thorne's peacock came down from the hall roof every evening to walk the rows, dragging its tail through the windfalls like a wet sheet.

Nobody in the village would say how the bird had come. Some said a travelling man had swapped it for a clock. Others said it had hatched from a blue egg that rolled out of the mill race. The children counted its eyes instead. There were nine on the long tail, and each one, they said, had seen something the village had done wrong.
Tomas Greave picked for the hall and owed the bailiff for a cracked cart wheel, so he had been filling his coat with plums for a month. One evening the bird stood in front of him on the path and would not move. He could not step round it. It tilted its crest and looked at the bulge under his arms, and the eye at the tip of the nearest feather opened wider, as if someone had lit a lamp behind it.
He emptied his coat on the path, plum by plum, and the peacock ate every one before walking off into the dusk. Next morning the bailiff found his cart wheel mended and the orchard gate hung true. Tomas never took another plum. He said the bird had counted them, and he did not want a tenth eye on its tail.
