Cartoon character with a saw on a leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo shows a smiling cartoon character with dark hair, wearing a dotted patterned dress and holding a saw. A line of chain-like cursive lettering runs diagonally above the figure. The linework is bold and clean, with solid black fills on the hair and dotted texture on the clothing, set against slightly weathered skin.

Nobody on Clement Street could say who had padlocked the bike shed, only that the key went down a drain in 1997 and the caretaker took the spare to his grave. So when Winnie Ashdown came up the path with her late father's bow saw under one arm, the lads from number nineteen stopped kicking their ball and stepped back to watch.

She didn't hurry. She set the saw against the links, lined the blade up with the third ring the way her father had taught her to line up a cut on a skirting board, and said to nobody in particular, "Measure twice, then write to the council." The first stroke sent a shower of rust onto her good shoes. The second made the youngest boy cover his ears, though the noise was no worse than a kettle coming to the boil.
It took eleven minutes. Mr Pemberton from the flat above came down in his dressing gown to object, then stood with his mouth open and a cup of tea going cold in his hand as the chain slid off the rail and pooled across the step. Winnie wiped the teeth of the saw on her apron, which was printed all over with small blue dots, and passed the thing to the nearest lad. "Hold that," she said. "It's the only tool in the house that ever did what it was told."
Then she wheeled out her black upright, a bicycle whose bell had never once been rung, and rode off towards the canal without looking back. Pemberton picked up the padlock, still snapped shut on a length of chain, and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to work out whose joke it had been.
