A pink butterfly sits above a blue butterfly, both with black outlines and dotted spots on their wings, joined by fine black vine swirls and stippled dots. The wings are shaded with lighter and darker tones of their base colour, and the design is set against plain skin with a white towel and a plastic-covered surface behind the foot. The composition runs diagonally down the top of the foot toward the toes.

You'll not believe what Mrs Pargeter did with the rides' paint tins this week. The Waltzer had gone grey after the rain, so she sent Ruby up the ladder with the pink and I was made to hold the lamp, and by teatime the whole top of the big wheel had butterflies on it. Pink ones at the front, blue ones chasing behind, all tangled up in those thin black curls she does with a brush no thicker than a hair.

Ruby wouldn't come down until she'd finished the wings. She said a butterfly is only a fair thing if it looks like it might leave. So she painted the spots in white, then went back over them with a dot no bigger than a pinhead, and the fellow from the generator van said it was the daftest thing he'd seen all season, and then he stood there watching for twenty minutes anyway.

Our lot pulls out on Sunday for Hexham, and the wheel comes down in pieces, so the butterflies will go into a crate packed with sawdust. I asked Ruby if that bothered her. She shrugged and said paint doesn't mind being packed, it only minds being left out in the rain.

Keep an eye out for the wheel in the lights at Hexham. If you see it turn, look for the blue one on the left. That one's mine. I pressed my thumb into the wet corner and nobody's noticed yet.
