Cartoon peacock on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A cartoon peacock with a rounded teal and purple head, a large stylised eye, a short orange beak and a plump green body faces right. Its tail fans out to the left into several peacock feathers with blue and gold eye markings, and bold black outlines define the shapes. Smooth shading and saturated greens, blues, purples and orange fill the design against the plain skin of the upper back.

Nobody in Pennyfield sold so much as a bucket of slack without asking Mother Vane first, and that was the trouble with Mr Hollis, who had never asked a living thing for anything in his life. He wanted the old coal yard by the canal, and the peacock sat on its gate every morning with her great purple eye fixed on him, as if she were pricing him.

So Hollis paid a rough fellow called Dunn a shilling to pluck her tail while she slept. Dunn came up the towpath after dark with a sack and a pair of shears. But Mother Vane had heard every word said in that yard, and she had spent the afternoon untying her feathers from the fence where they hung to dry, then tying them back into her tail one by one, so that every blue and gold eye stood open to the lamplight.
Dunn reached the gate, looked up, and saw a hundred eyes looking down at him. He dropped the shears, the sack, and very nearly his trousers, and ran the whole length of the towpath shouting that the coal yard was watched by the constabulary, the parish and the Almighty. By morning Hollis had sold nothing, and Mother Vane was sitting on his doorstep with a single green feather laid across the mat like a visiting card.
The feather is still pinned above the Pennyfield post office counter. The postmistress says it winks when the bell rings, and that Mr Hollis has never once come in to collect his mail without first looking up at it.
