Peacock and cherry blossom on the thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A full-colour peacock stands on a branch of pink cherry blossom, with its tail fanned downwards in greens, blues and gold with eye-spot feathers. The shading is smooth and blended, with soft highlights on the wings and head and a pale blue wash behind the birds. The design fills the frame diagonally on the side of the thigh, with the blossoms framing the bird.

The orchard at the top of the valley had one peacock, and everyone agreed it had no business being there. Its feathers were the green of river weed and its neck the blue of a kingfisher's back, and it walked among the cherry trees as if it had paid the rent. When the blossom came in April the old women said the bird was counting the petals, and that it would not leave until the last one fell.

Marta Ruddle, who kept the bees for the Coombe farm, decided to catch it. She went up with a sack of barley and a length of red ribbon, thinking a bird that vain would be easy to bargain with. The peacock watched her come, lifted one foot, set it down on a branch heavy with pink flowers, and spread its tail until the eyes in the feathers looked at her one after another. She stood still and felt, she said later, like a thing being weighed.
She did not catch it. She sat under the tree until dusk and ate her bread, and when the light went the bird folded its tail and stepped down into the grass and was gone. In the morning there was a single cherry petal on her sack, and on the ribbon a feather, gold at the tip, that she kept in the hive box for the rest of her life. The bees never swarmed for her again, and the orchard blossomed on regardless.
