The bank manager's cat had never once been seen without his hat, and the village had decided, long ago, that this was a matter of principle. Every Tuesday he sat in the window of Pell and Sons on Church Row, monocle screwed to one grey eye, pearls looped across his waistcoat, watching the High Street as though it owed him money.

So when the parish clerk came in one wet morning, shaking out an umbrella and complaining of a missing ledger, nobody thought to ask the cat. Mr Pell searched the cupboards. The clerk searched the coal scuttle. It was young Dora from the bakery who finally looked up at the window and saw the monocle glint, very slightly, toward the back room where the safe stood open.
The ledger was found that afternoon beneath the cat's cushion, along with a tin of mints, a pearl bead, and a receipt for a thing nobody could later name. Mr Pell wanted the animal turned out onto the pavement. The clerk, to everyone's surprise, lifted his hat politely and asked whether the creature might keep his post.
The cat returned to the window the next morning, polished his monocle on his paw, and gazed at the High Street with the same expression as before, only now, if you knew where to look, a little more satisfied.
