Kitten with a ball of yarn and bow
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A kitten sits with its front paws resting on a ball of yarn, with a ribboned bow tied near its head. Fine black outlines and feathered hatching give the fur texture, with the eyes and nose drawn in detail. Curling swirl motifs surround the lower half of the design on a plain pale background.

The kitten arrives in the wrong box, which tells you Mrs Pennock has been meddling again. It is the grey of wet slate, with a ribbon knotted at its neck, and it stares at you across the counter of the shop on Bridge Street as if you owe it money.

By Friday the kitten has learnt the shop. It bats a skein of navy off the low shelf and sends it under the till, and it sleeps in the basket of unsold cardigans. When Mrs Dunmore comes in for her four-ply, she finds a cream ball rolling across the floorboards with the kitten trotting after it, tail up like a flag. You wind the loose ends back onto the ball each evening, and the kitten presses its paws down on top as if to help.
On Saturday the ball goes missing for real. You follow the thread out of the door, across the wet cobbles and under the gate of the Pennocks' yard, where it climbs the drainpipe and disappears through a window you have never seen open. The kitten is already there on the sill, paws on the ball, bow askew and pleased with itself. Mrs Pennock sits at her kitchen table, knitting a grey scarf with no end in sight.
You stand in her doorway with the thread still looped round your wrist. She says the kitten was never meant for you. It was meant for her, and now there is a line of wool from your shop to her window that nobody on Bridge Street will ever cut. You take the ball home that night, and the kitten walks beside you the whole way, stopping every few yards to bat at the thread running back the way you came.
