Cat on a branch in a blue moon on a back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A black cat sits on a bare tree branch that reaches across from the left into a large pale circle, which may represent a moon. The cat and branches are rendered in solid black ink with fine twigs, while the circle is edged with loose blue splashes and speckles. The tattoo sits across the shoulder blade and upper back, with the blue ink giving the design its strongest contrast against the skin.

The cat came up the sycamore the winter the lifts at Harrow Court stopped, and nobody on the fourteenth floor could say whose it was. It was black all over, and it sat on the one long branch that reached across the car park like a hand held out. People carried their shopping up the stairs and looked at it on the way past. Old Mrs Ferrier said it was waiting for a debt to be paid. The children said it was only waiting for the moon.

The moon came up over the estate every night that January, pale and flat as a dinner plate, and when the sky went deep enough it turned the colour of the swimming baths in town. The cat sat in the middle of it with its tail curled round its feet. Anyone who was awake and sad enough to look out of their window could see it, and the old people said that was how you knew who needed help.
Dev Okafor was eleven and did not believe in any of it. He climbed the sycamore one night in February with a torch in his teeth, meaning to bring the cat down for his nan, who had lost her own. The branch was thin and cold and it bent under him. When he reached the cat it did not move. It only looked at him with its eyes going the same blue as the sky, and he found he had nothing to say to it except the truth, which was that he was frightened of the stairs in the dark.
He sat there until his fingers stopped working. In the morning the lift at Harrow Court was mended, and the cat had gone, and the sycamore had one small green bud on the end of its highest twig.
