Single-line bird on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous outline of a bird with a long curved neck and head, and one wing spread diagonally down the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark and slightly reddish. The design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a teal surface and a brown fabric background.

Dear Nell,

The heron came back to the slipway the morning after the gale, standing on the bottom rung of the ladder as though it had been posted there. Mr Pascoe says it has nested in the lee of the old lifeboat shed for three springs now, and that a heron who stays through winter means to keep the harbour. I told him herons don't keep anything. They wait, and then they take what the tide brings.
Your father's boat came in on Thursday with one hand short and a split in the foresail you could post a letter through. Nobody has said Tom's name aloud in the Anchor since. Mrs Kittow lit a candle in the chapel window and then, when the wind got up again, she carried it into the kitchen, where it would not blow out.
I went down at dusk with the tin of bread crusts you always used to feed the gulls, and the heron did not move for me. It only turned its long neck round, slow as a crane on a hoist, and looked at me with one eye, then at the water beyond the mole where the light was going copper. When it thinks, it lifts one wing, like a man pointing out a fault in a mooring. I believe it was pointing out the tide.
When I came back up the steps, the candle in Mrs Kittow's window had gone out, and I stood there a long while before I understood it was only the wind. I am writing to say I will walk out to the end of the mole on Sunday with the bread. If the heron is still on the ladder, I will tell it what the boats said. If it has gone, I will know it has gone somewhere that is not here.
Your loving sister, Ada
