Cat on a branch under a moon

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A black cat sits on a bare branch beside a leafless tree, with a pale full moon and scattered stars above. The cat and branches are solid black silhouettes, while the sky and background use soft, blended washes of teal, blue, green and pink. The design fills the inner forearm and is framed against a plain dark background.

Mrs Okonkwo's son brought her a flask of tea at midnight, and she insisted on sharing it with me, though she can barely lift her own cup now. She asked me whether the sky was clear. I went to the window and told her there was a moon, nearly full, and a scatter of stars over the car park. She said her late husband used to say a cat sitting under a moon was a sign that somebody was keeping watch. I didn't know what to say to that, so I said the cat on the big oak by the bins was probably doing exactly that.

She laughed, which made her cough, which made me reach for the oxygen. Then she closed her eyes and said, quite clearly, that the sky over Hull had always looked like that to her, green at the edges and pink where the sun had been. I checked her sats twice after that, just to be sure, and they held.

At four I'll do the round again. The moon will have moved a little across the window by then, and I'll tell her so, because she likes to be kept up to date with things she can't reach.
