Moon and galaxy tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large, full moon sits on the right of the design, set against a night sky of blue, violet and teal nebula clouds scattered with small white stars. The background is shaded softly and blended into the moon, which is rendered with fine grey detail and highlights. The dark edges of the skin around the lower part appear torn open to reveal the cosmic scene beneath.

Sit down, the pair of you, and don't go poking at that ceiling. Ada Penrose kept this house thirty-one years and she never once let a guest see the roof open, not even the night the gale took the slates off the north side and left the attic gaping like a split coconut. That's what she told the lodgers in the morning, anyway. I was on the landing with a candle, and I saw it.

The rain had stopped by midnight, but the wind kept up a moaning in the chimney, and when the last lath cracked loose the dark above us peeled back like a sheet off a bed. Where the lath had been there was no sky, not the sky you know, but a great blue weather of cloud, violet and teal, with little white pins of light scattered through it the way salt sits on a fish. And hanging right over the bathroom door, so close you could have reached up and touched it, was the moon. Full as a bowl of cream. Not a silver penny like the calendar from the chandler's. It had grey hollows in it and shadows you could count.

Ada went up the ladder in her nightdress with a bucket of tar, swearing she'd seal it before the Walkers came down for breakfast. She stood there a long while with the bucket in her hand. Then she came down and told me the roof was fine and I should go to bed. In the morning the attic was dry and whole, and the moon was gone, though the Walkers swore they'd seen it through the skylight clear as day. I never argued. Some nights the sea rolls in and some nights the sky does, and a sensible woman knows which one to mop up after.
