Cat portrait in a lace frame on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A grey cat's face looks slightly to one side inside a diamond-shaped frame with a dotted, lace-like border. Pink shading fills the inner edge of the frame, and pale yellow and grey scrolls curl above the cat's head. The cat is rendered with soft grey shading and dark outlines, with pink on the nose and cheeks.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Hetty Crane had been promised the cat would sit still for her portrait, and Brassica, a grey tabby with a torn left ear, had been promised nothing at all. She arrived at Walter Sowerby's back room on Tanner Lane in a basket lined with an old hymnal, and immediately turned her head towards the window where the gulls were quarrelling over the bins.

Walter had learned long ago that cats do not pose, they merely pause. He worked in fine nib and grey wash, catching the moment she glanced aside, and when the sitting was done he framed the thing in a diamond of card cut with a lace border, the inner edge brushed with rose-pink silk. Above her head he curled two pale scrolls of gilt leaf, the sort of flourish a man uses when he wants the eye to forgive a little wilfulness.

Hetty never came back for it. The following spring the shop bell rang every Thursday at eleven, and a grey shape would pad past the counter, climb onto the stool and sit beneath the frame, staring sideways at the door with exactly the look Walter had given her. Customers assumed she was waiting for someone. Walter let them assume.

When the bell finally rang one Thursday and no cat came, he found himself watching the doorway anyway, pencil in hand, the painted green eyes fixed on the same spot as his own. Some subjects are only ever finished when they leave.
