Rose and magnolia with watercolour splashes on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a realistic pink rose with green leaves at the centre, surrounded by pink magnolia blooms and closed buds. Soft shading gives the petals depth, while loose blue and pink splashes spread beneath the flowers and down the leg. The design fills the upper calf and trails towards the ankle, with the flowers grouped in the upper half of the frame against a dark background.

The generator coughs twice before it catches, and by then you've already loaded the wrong brush. Across the field Mr Okonedo shouts that the wind is coming off the sugar beet, which means the paint will skin before you reach the petals. You don't argue. You wipe the rose off the carousel panel with a rag and start again, the way your nan taught you on a fence rail in Kent: one loaded stroke, then lift and let the water do the rest.

By dusk the rounds are turning and the bulbs are doing their soft stutter. The rose on the third panel is pink at its heart and blue at its edges, because you let the wash bleed where it wanted to go. The magnolias you painted on the back of the ride have cupped petals that look like they're opening for nobody in particular. Your fingers smell of turpentine and the sugar from the candyfloss van, and you have stopped minding either.
At midnight, when the last lad has been walked off the dodgems, you find the blue jar tipped over on the boards. It has run in a long lazy spatter down to the step, the exact colour of the sky over the Medway in April. Someone would have swept it up. You leave it there and crouch to look, and it looks back at you like a map of somewhere you've never been.
In the morning the lorries pull out at six for Ashford. The rose will turn past strangers all day, bright and slightly absurd on its painted panel, and the blue splash will be scrubbed off the step by a lad with a bucket who never once asks where it came from. You keep the rag in your coat pocket, stiff with dried sky, and you tell yourself it's only for luck.
