Cat, roses and skulls across a back

Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers most of a person's back, with a central white cat wearing a dark hat and decorated with a red rose and a blue rose. Surrounding it are pink, white and red flowers, a cluster of skulls with small red roses near the waist, and a red rose at the lower edge. The bold black outlines and saturated fills of red, blue, pink and green give the piece a strong graphic look against a plain black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat had been waiting on the bench in Bay Nine since the lockout, its white paw raised the way it had been raised for two hundred years over shop tills in Osaka and Brixton, its black hat dusted with the grey of recycled air. Hana Okonedo-Wray wiped the lens with her sleeve, and the green eyes came back on one at a time, like a pair of lamps in a flooded street.

The dockmaster's note was short. Owner deceased, cargo reclaimed, unit to be scrapped by the turn of the cycle. Hana had seen a hundred such notes. But this cat wore a rose on its hat, petals pressed into resin, and under the paint someone had scratched two initials into the belly plate, M.K., with a year from before the Flood Ring was built. Hana knew that kind of grief. Her own grandmother had kept a tin of buttons like it.

She spent three nights on the cat. She swapped the dead cell for one salvaged from a tug, rewired the beckoning arm, and polished the skulls painted along its flank until the red roses between them looked wet. On the fourth morning the paw lifted, slow and stiff, and the bell inside it rang the old tune, a little flat.

Hana wrapped it in a dock-issue blanket and carried it to the shuttle gate herself. The tag on its collar read RETURN TO SENDER, KESTREL LANE. She tucked a fresh rose from the greenhouse under its hat, the paw still raised, and went looking for whoever M.K. had been waiting for.
