Full back piece with geisha and lotus flowers

Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo

A large back piece shows a geisha holding a round fan, dressed in an orange kimono with a purple wrap, set among pink lotus blooms and large green lily pads. Cherry blossoms, clouds and a red heart motif fill the surrounding background, with further tattooed sleeves on both arms. Bold outlines and smooth colour shading in greens, pinks, oranges and purples dominate, against areas of dark grey backdrop.

Dear Mae,

We're three days out from Grimsby and the swell has finally let go of the boat. Cook says a man who can't keep his tea down is no use to the net, so I've been eating his burnt toast and saying nothing. The skipper, Aldous Pike, has taken to calling me Professor because I brought a book aboard about the water gardens at Suzhou. Nobody reads it but me, and the cover has come off in the wet.

Last night the deckhands crowded round the galley stove to see a fan Lorna sent out with the supply boat. She's the mate's wife and paints on silk for a shop in Whitby. The fan is round, the colour of a dried plum, and on one side a woman in an orange robe lifts a slender stick to her cheek as if she has just heard her name. Behind her, pink lotus blooms open out of big green pads, and the water between them is so still you could drop a coin in it and hear nothing.

Pike held it up to the lamp and said it was the most useless thing he'd ever seen on a boat. Then he didn't hand it back for an hour. When we hauled at four this morning the net came up heavy, cod silver and thrashing, and all I could think of was that pond, the pads lying flat on the surface with nothing moving under them but the light.

I'm going to ask Lorna to paint a lily pad on the cover of my book for you. Tell Dad the fish are fine. Tell him I'm eating.

Love, Tom
