Cat silhouette with sunset and waterfall
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat silhouette forms the outline of this tattoo, filled with a sunset sky, a mushroom or tree shape, large green leaves and a yellow flower. Small animal silhouettes sit on a branch near the base, above a turquoise waterfall and red crystal shapes. Bold black outlines and saturated colour blend smoothly across the composition.

Every evening the cat at Hollin Gate lay down across the road with her tail curled over the river, and every evening the carters argued with her about the light. Her back was the colour of the hills at dusk, rust and then gold and then a bruised purple at the shoulder, and she would not stand until the last wagon had rolled across and the sun had gone down behind her ribs.

Old Teodor came up from the lowland with a donkey, a sack of salt and no papers at all. He asked her plainly what the toll was. She said nothing. She looked past him to the branch above the falls, where a row of field mice and two sparrows sat watching him the way children watch a fair. Teodor had not said his daughter's name aloud since she walked over the ridge eleven winters before. He had not meant to say it now either.
The cat waited. The water roared over the red stones below her. At last Teodor said, Marta, and the word came out of him cracked like ice. The sparrows shifted on the branch. The mice looked at each other. The cat yawned, stretched her long tail out over the falls, and let the river pass beneath it as if it were only a thread.
When the donkey was across, Teodor turned round. The cat had risen. The sun had come loose from her body and was sliding down the far slope, and where it touched the road the grass went green and the leaves unfolded like hands. The mice came down the branch one by one and followed the donkey's shadow, and the cat sat on the rock and washed her face, for the toll had been paid and there was nothing left to guard.
