Cactus and sombrero sunset on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A flowering saguaro-style cactus stands beside a sombrero, set against a red and orange sunset inside a black circular outline. A dark desert silhouette with a smaller cactus and two birds sits on the right. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a few shaded highlights give it a classic colour look, with the sombrero band in patterned reds, blues and yellows.

The sombrero had been sat on twice by the time Dad lifted it down from the hook above the Gold Star's counter, and he wouldn't let me carry it out to the van. "It's been to Torremolinos," he said, "which is practically Arizona." The band was still bright, red and blue and a yellow like custard, though the brim had gone soft and grey from years of tea steam.

We drove past the retail park to the edge of Morecambe, where the last cactus in Lancashire grew in a clay pot beside the shuttered bingo hall. Nobody knew who had planted it. It had one yellow flower stuck on top like a stubborn sunflower, and every spring the council sent a man to pull it out and every spring it came back. Dad stood at the railings with his hands in his pockets, looking at the grey water as if it were a desert he'd been promised and never collected.
"Your nan wore a hat like that to the Co-op Christmas do in 1979," he said. "Said it made her look like Rita Hayworth. It made her look like a lampshade, if you ask me." He laughed, then didn't, and set the sombrero on the cactus so the flower poked up through the crown like a stalk through a hat stand.
The sun went down behind the Heysham chimneys, red first and then orange, and two gulls cut across it, black as cut paper. Dad took the hat back, folded it under his arm and said nothing at all, which was how I knew he was keeping it.
