Celtic knot armband on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A photograph of a woman with long red hair, a plaited braid and layered necklaces, showing a band tattoo on her upper arm. The tattoo is a row of interlaced Celtic knots with a central knot motif, drawn in fine, even lines. The ink appears brown or reddish-brown against pale skin, and the dark background keeps the focus on the arm.

The guy ropes had frozen stiff overnight, so Nell worked each one between her palms until the hemp gave. Behind her the centre pole leaned like a drunk against the wind, and Mr Pruett stood at the gate with his ledger under one arm, pretending not to watch. Eleven acts had gone at Christmas. The lion had been sent to a sanctuary in Wales with a leaflet that called it rescued, which Nell suspected was only half true.

She had learned her knots from old Tomasz, who could tie a Turk's head in the dark and claimed it was the only honest thing a man could do with string. Bowline for loads that must never slip. Clove hitch for the rails. Round turn and two half hitches for anything that had to hold a body above the sawdust. He had saved the interlaced one for last, the knot with no beginning and no end, and said riggers tied it on the wrist of anyone they didn't expect to see again.

Pruett came across the field on Thursday with two men from a holiday park in Norfolk. They wanted the big top by Friday, poles included, and they would pay for the canvas by the yard. Nell said nothing while they walked the ring and measured the rake of the seating. When they had gone, she took the last length of rope from the wagon and worked the knot slowly, over and under, until her fingers ached.

On Friday the buyers found the tent already folded, the poles stacked by length. On the final stake hung a Turk's head so tight that Pruett's man had to fetch a saw to cut it free.
