Dad's marks are still on the lamp-room door, the ones he cut with a pit nail every shift he went down the Ashgrove drift. Eleven hundred and four of them, in fives, a gate every five. Mr Coyle from the office came up with a bucket of whitewash this morning and said the lamp-room needed doing up before the inspector came.
