Celtic knotwork ring with two dragon heads

Mixed · Flash

A symmetrical Celtic knotwork design with two dragon or serpent heads meeting at the top of a large ring. The outer ring uses black interlacing bands, while the centre holds a red interlaced knot with a small red circle below. The bold, centred composition sits on a plain white background.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, before the sausage rolls go cold. You'll want the story of the Hallam brothers, because you all talked about them in the fourth form and none of you ever got it right.

Their gran kept a loom in the back of the chip shop on Mill Lane, and she told them every ring is a serpent that bit its own tail, so it can never be finished and never be let go. Two dragons were carved into the school gatepost, facing each other over the arch, and the brothers swore one beast was theirs apiece. Every dinner break they climbed up between those heads and argued about whose was fiercer.

Then the winter the river came over the banks, young Tomas went under the bridge after a football nobody else would fetch. Daniel tied the end of the washing line round his own waist and went in after him. Neither of them ever told the headmaster how it went. They came out on the mud with the line wound around their wrists in a snarl so tight the fire crew needed half an hour and a pair of shears to cut them free.

The line was never really cut, though. Gran said the knot ran through both of them after that, one thread each, and they spent the next forty years finishing each other's sentences and starting each other's fights. Mind, the old gatepost is still standing at the school, and if you look close at the bottom of the arch you'll see a little red ring where the rope ran through. Nobody on the council can explain it. Go on, pour yourselves another, and raise a glass to the pair of them.
