Polynesian-style sea turtle design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black sea turtle drawn in a Polynesian-inspired tribal style, with the head and flippers filled with solid black patterning. The oval shell carries a central spiral surrounded by concentric bands of dotted, zigzag and curled motifs. The design is shown in black ink on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The old turtle came up out of the sea on the night the lamps were lit at Kelling Point, and she dragged herself past the fish racks and stopped beside the girl mending nets. The girl was called Ilo, and she had kept her eyes on the knots all evening so as not to be frightened. The turtle spoke in the voice of wet sand. She said the sea had lost its road. The currents that once wound inward and then breathed back out had slackened, and the fish no longer knew which way to turn when the moon pulled.

Every band on my back is a current, the turtle said. The dotted ones are where the rain falls into the water, the zigzags are the reef teeth, and the curled ones are where lost things turn over and over until they find their way home. I have carried the map a hundred years, and it is wearing thin. You must walk it inward to the centre, where the spiral begins, and bring back the first wave.
Ilo walked it barefoot. She crossed the rain bands and the reef teeth and the curled places where a child's comb and a broken oar went round in slow circles. At the centre there was no great pool, only a small dark basin and a stone worn smooth by a thousand tides. She lifted the stone, and far out past the point the sea began to turn the other way, slowly, the way a wrist turns when it starts to wind thread.
When she came back to the shingle the turtle had gone. But the net she had been mending held a spiral knot that would not slip, and the fishermen that dawn said the water ran round the reef as gently as the lines on an old back.
