Chainsaw silhouette with blood splatter on calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a man raises a long-barrelled gun overhead with one arm and holds a chainsaw hanging at his side with the other. Loose red splatters surround the figure, and the words Hail to the king baby run in black lettering up the right side of the design. The figure is a flat black fill with crisp edges, the splatters are painted in red, and the piece sits on a lower leg against a red background.

The chainsaw was the trouble, as it always is. He built it from cardboard, a coat hanger and a hand drill that gave up in the second act, so the final scene had him on the lip of the stage with the dead saw dangling from one fist and the old drainpipe hoisted over his head. He bellowed the line about the king, the front row cheered, and someone in the balcony threw a rolled-up raffle ticket that stuck to the red paint on his forearm and stayed there through all the bows.
After the audience had gone, he asked me to hold the torch while he locked up. I found him in the wings practising the pose in the fire-door mirror, one arm up, the drainpipe balanced just so, grinning like a man who'd been crowned by a committee. When I told him the cleaners would curse him for the splashes on the boards, he only shrugged and said every king needs a proper exit. The red spots ran across the dark stage in a loose trail, like a map of somewhere we've all meant to visit. Come up at Easter and see it before the caretaker gets at it. Love, Joan.
