Checkerboard optical illusion on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A checkerboard grid wraps around the forearm and warps into a pinched, hourglass-like form, creating an optical illusion of depth. The squares are built from fine stippled dots that shade from dark to light, with the tones varying across the grid. The design is in black and grey and fills the forearm evenly against a plain grey background.

Tuesday, and the rain has been drumming on the awning since six. Dad's old draughts board is still in the crate under the trestle, the one whose lid swelled when the Ouse came over the wall in 1998. Nobody has played on it for years. Then last week the lads from the bus depot started calling it the Hourglass, because when you sit on a stool and look down, the squares seem to pinch inward at the middle and drag your eye into a hole.

Eleven past eleven, a stranger in a sodden anorak put a fiver on the cloth without a word. He lost the first game in nine moves and the second in twelve. Each time he looked up from the board and then back down, as if I'd shifted the squares while he wasn't watching. "It's the lid," I said. "It's the light," he said, tapping the middle where the grid bowed like a waist. "Under the tarp it's always like this," I said. "Rain makes the squares swim."
He stood up at half past, left the fiver where it lay, and walked off towards the station with his hands in his pockets. I counted the coins twice. Then I did what Dad always did and turned the board over on the trestle to let the wet out of the joints, and for a moment, with the lamp behind it, the whole thing looked perfectly flat and ordinary, just a grid of squares that had been waiting for someone to notice.
