Concentric maze pattern on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a central set of concentric circles surrounded by radiating zigzag lines that form a maze-like pattern. The linework is solid and bold, with the pattern filled in dense black and white contrast. At the lower edge the design softens into a stippled dotwork fade across the skin, and the dark sleeve of a garment sits to the right of the frame.

Dear Tom, the wasps have got into the Victoria plums again, so I've been picking at dawn with a bucket on my hip and a bad temper. Grandad's orchard still makes no sense from the lane. He set the trees out in rings around the old cider press, each ring broken by a zigzag of hedge, so a man coming in from the road walks four turns and ends up where he started. Mum says he did it so the lorries couldn't find the press during the rationing. I think he did it because he liked being the only one who knew the way out.

Yesterday the Hendry boys came up for the apples and went in after a dropped ball and didn't come out for an hour. I found them sitting in the middle, under the eaves of the press, eating windfalls and laughing at the sky. They'd been walking in circles, they said, but the circles kept opening up. I didn't tell them the trick is to keep one hand on the bark of the trees on your left. Grandad told me that when I was nine, and I have never once used it, which is perhaps the point.

I've been sorting the pickings on the old trestle table, the sound fruit apart from the bruised, and I keep finding one tree near the centre with branches so heavy they bow to the grass. I'd like you to see it before the frost. Bring the good ladder and not the wobbly one. Come the weekend of the fair, and we'll walk it together, you on my left hand.
