Chemical structure diagram on an arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A skeletal chemical structure diagram is tattooed in thin black linework, with ring bonds, a short chain and small element labels including CH3, OAc, O and H3C. The lines are even and crisp with no shading, and the design sits diagonally across the arm against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background.

Mrs Duthie drew on the slipway with a bent nail the morning the post boat didn't come. She crouched over the wet concrete, tongue between her teeth, and sketched a six-sided ring with a bridge hanging off one corner, like a hinge someone had forgotten to close. "Carbon never gets tired of itself," she said. "Four arms, always. Look how it holds on."

I was nine and mostly interested in the gulls. But she made me count the corners, then the bonds, then the little letters she wrote beside them: CH3 for a stubby branch, O for a bead of oxygen stuck in the ring like a tooth. The island had one shop, one chapel and one pharmacy, and the pharmacy was her front room with a bell over the door. Every summer she tried to teach someone the shapes before the ferry took them to the mainland for good.

The tide came in over the slipway that afternoon and took the drawing piece by piece. I stood on the wall and watched the long chain at the far end go last, its joints fading like a row of children letting go of hands, until only the ring was left, a smudge of grey water filling its hollow.

Years later I was on a train south with my own boy asleep against the window. I took a biro from my bag and drew the whole thing on the back of a ticket, every corner in its place, the chain trailing off the edge of the paper. Nobody in the carriage knew what it meant, and I didn't tell them. I just kept my finger on the last bond until the train slowed for the mainland station.
