Molecular structure on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework tattoo of a chemical structure sits on the outer thigh, showing a fused bicyclic ring at the top and a separate benzene-style ring below, joined by short zigzag chains. Small labels read NH, OH, NH2 and HO at the ends of the bonds. The lines are even and uniform in black ink with no shading, and the design fills the frame against bare skin, with fabric visible at the top and bottom edges.

Right, shift up and mind the draught, because this is the one about two molecules who met at the Palais de Danse on a Saturday night and could not agree where to put their hands. The first was a double ring, a great round room fused to a smaller one, with a little hat of nitrogen perched on top as if he'd just collected it from the cloakroom. He kept his hydroxyl tucked round the back, where a decent dancer never looks. The other was a single ring, plain as a Sunday loaf, with two HO corners that gave the whole floor a faint whiff of sherry.

They had a chain between them, two short zigzags, the sort you only get by thinking hard about the next step. Every time the brass band struck up something slow, the chain pulled taut and the sherry ring leaned in. "You're leaning," said the nitrogen hat. "I'm bonded," said the ring. "Those aren't the same thing, are they?" The whole hall went quiet to hear the answer, the way a hall does when it has heard that conversation a thousand times and still wants the ending.
When the band went into the fast one, the couples scattered like dropped marbles. The double ring spun and the single ring spun with him, and the NH2 at the end of the chain swung out wide enough to clip a fellow in a cardigan. Nobody broke anything. They danced out the back door into the car park, the chain bending but holding, and by the morning they were still stuck together, which is more than you can say for most of the couples in that hall.
