Cherry blossom branch and characters on a foot

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A branch with dark grey stems and several pink cherry blossom flowers curves diagonally across the top of a foot, with two black characters to the right of the branch. The linework is dark grey and fairly bold, with soft pink petals and light shading on the flowers. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a grey textured carpet, with the toes visible at the bottom.

She put it in a jam jar on the kitchen windowsill, because the jar was the only vessel clean enough. Over three days the petals spread. On the fourth morning two small characters had appeared on the whitewashed wall beside the sink, as if someone had written them in soot with one finger. Mrs Okada could not read them, but she knew the shape of a name when she saw one. It was her husband's, the name the temple had given him before he went down to the boats and never came back up from.

She did not go to the harbour that week. She sat with the jar and let the blossoms drop into a saucer, one by one, until the last petal had gone and the stems were bare and ordinary again. The grandson took the branch out to the bins without being asked.

Then she fetched a cloth and washed the wall, and the characters came off with the soot.
