Pink lilies and vine on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Three pink lily-style flowers with black outlines and stamens are linked by curling black vines and swirls, climbing from the top of the foot up towards the ankle. The linework is bold and clean, with soft red and pink shading filling the petals and small dark leaves adding contrast. The design is set against pale skin with a plain light background, so the colours stand out clearly.

Dear Ottilie, the last of the Marrowgate lilies came into bloom the morning your brother's ship sailed past the sea wall, and I thought of you at once, because you always said a flower that climbs is only showing off its roots. The gardeners on the north terraces have trained the vines up the stone stairs the way you asked, one curl above the next, so that from the gate you can follow them all the way to the bell tower. Every bloom has been painted by the king's clerk, who insists the petals are too pink for a royal garden, and who was sent away twice for arguing with the Queen's dyer.

Something has changed in the glasshouse. The black stamens have gone wrong in three of the flowers, dark as ink, and old Hesketh says it is the sea wind carrying salt up from the harbour. I told him salt does not make a lily grow a second bud out of its own elbow, but he only laughed and went back to counting the bottles of sorrel tonic he has been pouring into the troughs since spring.
I went down to the lower garden last night with a lamp and found the bottom blossom had opened in the dark, facing the water instead of the gate. Its leaves were folded tight around a small brass key, the sort the harbour master uses on the chain locker. I have put it in the tin box under my bed with your letters. Come home before the frost takes the last swirl off the wall, and bring the key back to whoever it was meant for.
Your loving sister, Maud
