Cherry Bomb pin-up with cherries and banners

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A drawn pin-up woman in a red polka-dot bikini sits within a circle formed by two ribbon banners reading CHERRY BOMB, with a pair of cherries on each side. Bold dark outlines, flat fills and small yellow stars give it a classic American traditional look. The main colours are red, green, pink and skin tone against a light grid background.

The jukebox at the Blue Heron had been stuck on the same bar of 'Sh-Boom' since Tuesday, and Dot Mabry was the only one in Calvary Falls who knew how to coax it loose with a flat hand and a swear word. So when Harlan Pike pulled in at dusk with a crate of dark Bing cherries rolling about in the back of his Ford, she didn't look up from the coin box. She just held out her palm.

Harlan had picked the fruit himself at Shaw's orchard before the sun was properly up, and he'd argued with himself the whole forty miles about whether a man could put his own name on a pie. Dot had heard it all before. She'd heard it since the spring his brother Earl painted their father's old truck candy-apple red and lettered CHERRY BOMB across the tailgate in gold leaf, so the county sheriff would know exactly who was blowing past the grain silos on Thursday nights. Earl was in the county jail now for the second time, and the truck sat under a tarpaulin behind the feed store, still smelling of varnish.

"Sell it as your mother's recipe," Dot said, sliding a stool across to him. "Nobody buys a pie from a name. They buy it from a memory."

She took the first cherry from the crate, split it with her thumbnail, and flicked the stone into the ashtray. It skittered across the Formica, dropped off the edge, and rolled under the jukebox. Somewhere inside the machine a gear clicked over, the needle dropped, and for the first time since Tuesday the whole diner heard 'Sh-Boom' all the way to the end.
