Pin-up riding a giant moustache

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A pin-up woman in a teal top, brown shorts, yellow belt, orange gloves and cream cowboy boots sits astride an oversized black moustache against a red halo. The words BEST RIDE and GIDDY UP frame her in bold lettering with red shading. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a cream background give it a classic American traditional look.

Nobody in Scarrow Quay would ride the moustache until Bet Lumley did it on a bet, gloves on and her good cream boots laced to the knee. The thing had hung in Auntie Ruth's bait shop since the regatta of 1951, a giant curl of black horsehair pinned to a board, and the men who came in for mackerel swore it twitched when the tide turned.

Bet had lost four shillings to the lamplighter's boy and wanted it back before the fair folded. She climbed onto the curl with the crowd pressing against the harbour wall, one hand on her hip, the other waving at the gulls as if she'd done it all her life. The moustache lifted. It was not a gentle lift. Gulls scattered, a crab basket went over, and somewhere a barker shouted that the best was yet to come.

Giddy up, Bet called, and the thing bucked her clean over the wall into the tangle of nets below. She came up spitting brine and laughing too hard to stand. The lamplighter's boy paid her the four shillings double, and by morning the moustache was gone from the bait shop, leaving only a curl of horsehair on the step and a note in Ruth's hand: Gone to the regatta. Ask Bet which one of them was riding whom.
