Cheshire Cat grin through torn skin on ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a dark, grinning face with glowing teal eyes and rows of white teeth, framed by a ripped opening in the skin with red and brown edges. The shading is smooth and the torn skin is rendered with a dimensional, lifelike effect. Bright teal contrasts with the black and flesh tones, and the design sits along the side of the torso.

The bread was still warm when the miller's daughter found the tear in the granary wall, a split as long as her forearm with raw red edges, and out of the dark behind it a grin looked back at her. Nobody in the kingdom of Harrowmere had ever seen such a thing, so when Wren ran to fetch her father, the grin was already widening.

The steward tried plaster, then tallow, then a blessing from the priest of Saint Hollin, who came with his bell and went away again quickly. The eyes behind the grin shone teal, like river ice under a late moon, and every night they counted the sacks aloud in a voice like a cat's purr. The grain stayed dry and the mice never came, which pleased the lord less than the laughing did.
Lord Aldous ordered the granary bricked shut. The masons worked all day and went home satisfied. In the morning the bricks lay stacked in neat rows on the cobbles, and the grin had grown another row of teeth. It offered a bargain through the gap: tell me where the king hid the tithe gold, and I will keep your sacks as sweet as my own mouth.
Wren was the only one who did not run from it. She leaned close, looked at the grin for a long while, and said her own name, plain and true, and nothing else. The grin shut its teeth. The wall closed smooth as bread dough, except for one faint red line that never faded. The granary has had no mice since, and no one in Harrowmere can say now what the king was hiding.
