Cheshire Cat grin tattoo on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large illustrated Cheshire Cat head with a wide toothy grin, pale grey fur and glowing green eyes, with a pink nose and whiskers. Blue swirls of smoke or fur rise above the head and trail beneath the chin, with soft shading and bold dark outlines. Bright blue, green and grey inks dominate the composition, which is centred on the calf.

The cat came aboard at Immingham with the coal, and by the second night the cook had decided she was the only honest soul in the crew. Nobody else would tell me when the bread had gone sour. Mabel simply sat on the flour bin and stared at me with those green lamps of hers until I checked it.

Mabel was a grey queen with a mouth too wide for her face. Captain Ansell swore she grinned at him from the wheelhouse step. The mate said it was the blue smoke from the galley stove that made her look like that, smoke that curled up the flue and spilled over the bows in long loops, as if it had somewhere better to be. I didn't argue. I had watched her grin at nothing for an hour.

Off Flamborough the fog came down thick as porridge, the engine coughed twice and went quiet. Ansell ordered the lamp lit and went below. When I looked up from the stove, Mabel was gone from the flour bin, and the grin was still there, hanging in the murk above the wheelhouse with blue swirls trailing beneath it. Then the engine caught, the fog thinned, and the grin faded like breath off a cold window.

We made Hull by Thursday. Ansell swore the cat had jumped ship at Immingham. I say she's still aboard, somewhere between the bread and the bilge, wherever there's warmth and a bit of fuss to be had. I kept a saucer of milk by the stove for a week regardless, and every morning it was licked clean.
