Circular geometric mandala on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A circular geometric mandala sits on the inner forearm, built from overlapping rings and angular points. Black outlines define the shapes, with teal, mint and cream fills and small yellow dots around a dark centre. The subject is centred against a plain black background, with a teal sleeve visible at the top of the frame.

The parterre had been drawn on squared paper in 1886, and nobody had ever planted it exactly as drawn. Edith Lowe spread the old plan across the potting bench and weighted its corners with trowels while the glasshouse ticked and cooled behind her. Three rings of box were meant to meet at points the drawing called stars, and the gravel between them had been dyed teal, a colour no supplier stocked any more, so she had settled for slate chippings and crushed mint leaves.

Her nephew Declan came up the brick path with a barrow and asked why she was pacing out circles at seven in the morning. She didn't tell him that the marigolds were meant to form a ring of yellow dots around a bare patch of earth, because nothing grew there in shade and the drawing's author had never once considered shade. She told him the old man who drew it had been a clockmaker before he was a gardener, and that every line on the plan was a gear tooth turning against the next.
They spent the morning with a length of string pinned to a stake at the centre. Declan kept dropping the far end into the nettles. By noon the outer ring was pegged, the cream-coloured stone path lay where the drawing said, and the dark middle sat open and waiting, too small for anything but a single rose.
Edith knelt, pressed her palm flat on the cold soil, and said nothing. Declan asked whether they were finished. She handed him the trowel and told him to dig the first marigold, because the clock always starts again from the middle.
