Chain wreath with red flowers on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A chain link circle sits at the top of a symmetrical arrangement of green and yellow leaves, with three red five-petalled flowers and small dark dots below. The chain and leaf outlines are bold and dark, with flat fills of green, yellow and red. The design is centred on the forearm against a plain, softly blurred background.

The rain had been coming sideways off the estuary since seven, and by ten the tarpaulins over the bric-a-brac stalls were sagging like wet sails. I was under mine with a tray of loose links, sorting the good from the rusted, when a boy of about nine stopped and asked me what the broken ring was for.

"It's a chain that won't close," I said. My grandfather forged it at the yard on Slipway Lane the winter the tide took the chandlery. He used to say a link left open was an honest thing, because it could still be joined to something. He bound a wreath of bay leaves around it in brass wire and never sold it, because nobody wanted a ring with a gap in it.
The boy turned it over in his fingers, then reached past it for the brooches my cousin paints on the next stall, the ones with campion and sorrel and little red flowers. He asked whether the dots were rain. I told him they were seeds, and he nodded as though that settled the matter.
When his mother came to fetch him, the downpour had thinned to a fine grey mist. She bought the brooch with the open chain at its centre and a paper bag of coins to go with it. I watched her pin it to her collar, and the market lamps came on one by one along the wet cobbles, and I found I had stopped minding the rain.
