A black ink tattoo across the upper back forms a circular design. At the centre sits a round emblem with the number 42 and three interlocking spiral motifs, with a small ornament rising above it. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last week of August, Hester Crane walked out to Mallow Orchard with a sack of salt and her father's grafting knife. Nine old trees stood in a ring around a flat grey stone, and the ring was older than the farm. Her grandmother had told her that whoever counted the fruit on that ring before the first frost would be let off whatever debt the hill was owed, and that the hill always answered forty-two, no matter how many apples hung there.

Hester had counted three times already. Each time the number came out different: sixty-one, then thirty-eight, then a figure she would not say aloud. She sat on the stone and ate a windfall while the wasps went about their business. A boy from the village came up the lane with an empty basket and asked whether she was the one who had lost her sister to the hill. Hester said she was not. She said she was only the one who could count.

At dusk she drew a ring in salt around the stone, pressing each mark down with her thumb, and cut a spiral into the bark of the middle tree. The knife slipped and the sap ran out black as ink. She laid forty-two windfalls in a circle on the grass, then set one small green apple above them on the root, like a bead on a string.

When the frost came in October, the ring was bare except for the middle tree, and the village found the grafting knife standing upright in the stone, its blade notched with forty-two small marks. Nobody asked Hester for the count again.
