Triangle and circle symbol with script word on back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the upper back shows a triangle enclosing a circle, with a vertical line through the centre and ornate scrolling filigree around the outline. A single thin line runs from the base of the symbol down to the cursive word Always. The linework is clean and even, using black ink only against plain skin.

The lift in block C stops between the ninth and tenth floors with a jolt you feel in your back teeth, and through the grille you hear Mrs Akers say, very calmly, that she has her shopping and Frank's walking stick and she would like to be let out now, please. You have the maintenance key on a cord round your neck, the torch from the caretaker's cupboard in one hand, and a tin of Jaffa Cakes you found in your coat pocket in the other. You pass the tin through the gap first. It seems the right thing to do.

The stick is the thing she won't let go of. She tells you Frank cut it from ash on the allotments the summer they moved into the flats, and that it never once let him fall, not even on the ice outside the Co-op. She keeps her purse on her wrist, her spectacles in a case, and the stick under her arm like a sergeant's baton. You talk to her about nothing. The football, the wind up the stairwell, whether the new bins on the fourth floor will ever get emptied. Somewhere below, a radio plays a hymn that doesn't belong to any station you know.
The engineer arrives at half eleven smelling of diesel and cold tea. The doors shudder open onto the landing, and Mrs Akers steps out without taking your arm, then stops and hands you the stick for a moment so she can fix her hat. She takes it back before you can say anything. Then she taps it along the balcony towards her door, tap, tap, tap, and you stand there with the torch still lit in your hand, watching the thin line of her light under the door until it goes out.
