Claddagh with green heart on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a Claddagh motif: two hands hold a heart topped by a crown, with the heart filled with a faceted green gem. The crown, hands and loops of the design are drawn in black outline with grey shading, while the gem carries the colour. The tattoo is centred on a forearm against a grey knitted fabric.

She shook him awake. He showed her what he had been doing with his knife and the long evenings: a ring of hammered silver cut from a drowned fisherman's spoon, its heart set with a green stone he had worked loose from the lens housing. 'For the girl in Cill Rónáin,' he said. 'The crown is for her father, who will never let her marry a lighthouseman. The hands are for whoever pulls the other back from the water.'
Mairéad said nothing about the oil or the wicks. She took the ring from his palm, turned it until the stone caught the grey light coming in from the sea, and then she trimmed the wick herself, filled the reservoir and climbed the iron stairs to the top where the glass was waiting.
At dawn a fishing boat came round the point with its sail patched in red, steering by a flash of green that no one on the mainland had ever seen the lamp throw before.
