Stag beetle on an inner forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large stag beetle is shown in profile across the forearm, with its wings spread and its mandibles and legs extended. The shading combines stippled dotwork on the wings and shell with smooth grey gradients and a geometric patterned panel on the abdomen. The beetle fills the frame against a soft, dim background, and the tattoo is shown in black and grey only.

The beetle was crossing the lino of Ward Seven at twenty to four, heading the wrong way along the skirting board as though it had a bed to report to. Ruth Abara saw it from the medicines trolley and felt the familiar small dread of a night shift: something out of place, something that needed a form. She crouched, and it stopped, mandibles lifted like a pair of antlers, and considered her.

Her grandfather in Kent had called them tiny stags and kept one in a matchbox on the windowsill for a whole summer, until it dried to a brown husk and he cried about it at the funeral. She had not thought about him since October. She eased a sample pot from the clinical waste drawer, slid the beetle in with a folded tissue, and watched its legs scrabble against the plastic. Its wings, when they opened under the strip light, were ribbed and dotted like the margin of an old map, and the panel on its back had a pattern of blocks that looked almost deliberate.
Bay Four was quiet except for Mr Hollins, who had been a joiner for forty years and could not sleep without a lamp on. He asked what she had. She held the pot up. 'Stag beetle,' he said. 'They don't fly until June. Must have come in on somebody's coat from the car park.' He squinted at it for a long time. 'Don't put it in the bin.'
At half five, when the sky over the multistorey had gone from black to the colour of dishwater, Ruth walked out to the hedge by the bins and tipped the beetle onto a leaf. It sat there, then unfolded its wings with a small dry sound and went under the leaves. She stood with the empty pot in her hand and thought of the matchbox, and of how close she had come to keeping it.
