Clock face with gears on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large clock face with Roman numerals fills the forearm, with a glass-like inner dial showing exposed gears and ornate hands. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast between deep blacks and soft grey highlights that give the metal a three-dimensional look. The tattoo is shown in close-up, with a blurred background of a person and a room.

The snow had been falling nine days when the clockmaker's boy came up the pass with a sack of gears on his back and no coat, and Agnes at the Stone Hart took one look at his blue fingers and set him by the fire before she let him say why he had come. He had come for the clock. Nobody in the valley had heard it strike since the frost took the bell-rope in the autumn, and the travellers who stopped had started to speak of the inn as a place where the hours had got lost.

Tobin opened the glass dial on the second night with a candle stuck to a saucer. Behind the numerals the gears sat tangled like a nest of wire, and one brass wheel had lost three teeth to some hand that had turned it too hard. The hands were bent, the minute hand curled like a fern. "It's not the works that stopped it," Agnes said from the stairs. "It's that nobody paid it any mind." She was right. The moment he pressed the worn tooth back into line with his thumbnail, the whole mechanism shivered and began, very faintly, to tick.
He worked until the candle guttered. By dawn the minute hand had crept up to the XII and the wind outside had gone quiet, as if someone had shut a door on it. Agnes made porridge, and the two of them sat listening to the clock count out the seconds in the warm kitchen.
When the thaw came down the valley, the first cart over the pass carried a carter who had been stuck at the foot of the hill for a week. He swore he heard the clock strike twelve before he reached the gate, though no one had rung it, and Tobin, walking home with a fresh loaf inside his coat, did not argue with him.
